A Dog’s View – Tip 7 – Don’t Punish a Warning

missgray

UPDATE:  MISS GRAY HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

Hello, my name is Miss Gray. I am a genteel lady who shares food, toys and treats with others. I get along well with dogs, but crave human contact. Regardless of the outstanding treatment I’ve received at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, this life does not suit me. The stress of living in a shelter caused me to lose a great deal of weight.

If you’d like to share your life with a fabulous running mate or a fun walking buddy, come by the shelter to meet me. We can play fetch and I’ll even show you how I catch a ball in midair. Afterward, I’d like to snuggle on your lap and feel loving arms wrapped around me. If you aren’t in the market for a best friend, kindly share my photo with other dog lovers. I want nothing more than to live the rest of my life with a family who loves me.

Perhaps you can also share Tip 7 with your friends. My trainer Laura is a smart cookie. I recommend everyone follow her advice.

Tip #7: Don’t Punish a Warning

Did you know… that growling is one way that dogs communicate their discomfort to other dogs and to people?  Growling is a dog’s inhibited way of saying, “Hey, I don’t like it when you do that!”  The problem is that, if you punish your dog for growling, then you are leaving him no choice but to escalate his behavior, even biting perhaps, to get his message across.  So, instead of punishing your dog for growling, thank your lucky stars that he chose to communicate in this way instead of resorting to something more drastic.  Of course, now you need to train him to be more comfortable when situations like this arise again!

About the Author: Miss Gray is four years old. She loves walks, spending time outdoors, swimming, playing fetch and snuggling. She is vet checked, spayed and up-to-date on all of her vaccinations. Visit Miss Gray at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, 3320 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh, New York. For more information, please call 516-785-5220.

Book Review: Desert Son by Glenn Maynard

untitled (2)

Synopsis:

Carter Spence is a 26 year-old accountant out of Boston who has an out-of-body experience following a car accident that kills his parents.  He views the chaos from above the scene of the accident, then passes through the tunnel and reunites with relatives who have long been dead. A woman he does not recognize approaches him and says, “Welcome, son.” Her message to him is that he needs to be aware of his true identity and should follow signs that will lead him there. She mentions mountains, but Carter is jolted back into his physical body before she can finish. After burying his parents, Carter heads west and meets a free-spirit named Brenda, whom he is drawn to on many levels. She becomes his travelling companion and leads him to Boulder, Colorado, and to an old white house of an old man named Martin. Diaries, hypnosis, and past-life regression reveal a bizarre connection between these three. Carter discovers that the truth to his identity can only be found by pursuing the answer to whether he is the reincarnation of his biological father in what is shaping up to be a love affair rekindled beyond the grave.

Review:

The author gave me a copy of Desert Son in exchange for an honest review.  My intention was to forward this book to one of my fellow readers, but the synopsis captivated me.  I requested an extension to read it myself.  The story begins shortly after a car accident.  Mr. Maynard did a fabulous job describing the accident through the eyes of the main character who left his body moments after the crash.  The next scene brings the reader to Heaven.  Again, the author’s writing style blanketed me in the warmth and love of Heaven.  I was just as disappointed as the Carter to return to earth.

The story is fast-paced, yet the settings are described perfectly. I imagined the long car ride and the house while reading.  It was enjoyable discovering this new author and recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fiction.

Author Joe Evener is in the Fantasy Spotlight

profile (1)Joe Evener is the author of The Heart of Seras: Journey to Seras. Thank you for joining me today. Please tell us more about your fantasy series. This is book one of five. The series is about my main character, Julie Ayers, and her journey in learning that her teacher, Marcus Campbell, is a warrior from another dimension, he takes her to Seras, and begins preparing her to face the evil that threatens both Seras and Earth. She tries, often times unsuccessfully to balance her life on Earth as a high school student and on Seras as the prophesied savior of their world. Julie fails miserably at first but learns over time, how to overcome her doubts and fears with Marcus Campbell’s guidance.

Journey to Seras COVER

The book sounds intriguing. At what age were you when you discovered your passion for writing? My mom always encouraged me to read classical books. I had read Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, Treasure Island, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver’s Travels and a little Shakespeare by the time I was thirteen. My best friend, Willie, my brother, David, and I were always creating some kind of story, making our own comic book superheroes/villains, and using our imaginations. I wrote my first story in 4th grade, a little story called “Super Joe” in which I was a superhero and I was protecting the President of the United States. I got a pretty good response from my classmates and the teacher, so I wrote a sequel. In 10th or 11th grade I wrote a western (I wish I still had a copy). After that I thought a lot about writing, I even penned a movie script that never got picked up, when I was in my twenties, but I usually just left the stories in my head.

What is your day job? I am a 5th grade Language Arts/Social Studies teacher at Big Walnut Intermediate in Sunbury, Ohio. I have also been the head coach of the girls’ high school track and field team at Big Walnut for the past 20 years. That experience has really helped give my character, Julie, a voice and personality.

What else are you working on? I have just finished the rough (rough) draft of book two of The Heart of Seras series, The Elders. It covers Julie’s sophomore and junior years of high school, and the history of Seras through the eyes of the five Elders. I am also working on two stand-alone books, Kingdom of the Rose, which is a medieval story about a king struggling with impending war and love, the other is Seducing Lily, which is a much different book for me in terms of content, as the title suggests. I also have several other stories in the works as I find more time.

Readers also enjoying getting to know the author on a personal level. I have a few personal questions for you. Would you please share an odd behavior you’ve picked up while writing? (An example: during intense scenes, my fingers pound the keyboard.) I’m not sure if it is odd or not, but I would be embarrassed if anyone caught me doing it, I act out my fight scenes in slow motion and record my body position in each movement, that way it is more realistic when I put it on paper.

It is strange, except to another author. I act out my scenes too. My family members have knocked on the office door several times wanting to know who I’m talking to. Now that I’ve insulted you, I have another question. If you had your own talk show, who would the first three guests be? Why? I love this question. I would say, Terry Bradshaw – while I’m not a Steelers fan (I’m a St. Louis Rams fan), I grew up admiring his talent and he is just hysterical on every interview I have watched; Justin Timberlake – this will not surprise my family or friends, I have a man-crush on J.T. and I’m not ashamed of it. He is a big time talent; and then, …Peter Jackson – while there are many other people I would prefer to interview over him, I would shamelessly try to have him turn my books into movies. I love his vision of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies.

Joe, thank you for taking the time to speak with me. Before we end this portion of the interview, please provide links to your book.

Em Epe is in the Author Spotlight

emepecoverI recently met Em Epe through our publisher Eternal Press and am excited for you to get to know her. The best way to familiarize yourself with someone new…interview them! I hope you enjoy our chat.

Welcome to the spotlight, Em! In my internet journeys I discovered that you wrote and published six books. Congratulations on your success!

Today we are going to discuss All of Me, A McRaidy Son. Please tell us a little bit about it.
It’s a sexy little story about a woman with a hurtful past that impacted her self-confidence until her old high school sweetheart comes back into her life. He is the “Ultimate Bad Boy” reformed but still turns their world upside down.

How did you come up with the idea for this book?
Its part of a series and his personality started edging through in the previous book. Den McRaidy just evolved!

It took five years for me to complete my book. How long did it take you to write All of Me? Hmmm, on this one, I worked on it, then let it simmer and then came back. Overall, it was about a year.

Every author enlists the help of a friend, family member or professional to read their WIP. Who reads the drafts of your novels?
I have a “Beta Listener”. My wonderful cousin lives on the other side of the country from me. We get on the phone and I read her the manuscript. I love this process because if she can sink in and a visual begins in her mind, I know I’m on the right path.
Your method is fantastic. Reading your work aloud is a great tool. I wonder how many writers realize that errors we miss when reading work silently, often stands out when you read it aloud.   Your novel is written and polished; now it is time to submit your manuscript to publishing houses. Tell me about the process. Was publishing easier or more difficult than you initially believed?
Publishing is an awesome experience. It’s much different than I anticipated. The notice that your book was accepted for publication can’t be described. It’s a combination of so many emotions, but mostly, “well damn, they liked it!” When you get your first round of edits back, sometimes, it’s lit up like the Vegas strip with suggestions and corrections!

Ah, the dreadful editing process. When you are not writing and editing, what TV shows do you enjoy?
My entire Wednesday night is planned around Survivor! I have been a fan since season one. I always get a pizza, silence my phone and shut off the computer. I am also addicted to Big Bang Theory! I have all the seasons on DVD and watch them frequently. Other than that, a few random cooking shows when I have time since I love to cook.

Season One of Survivor – Richard! Who can forget Richard? Where can readers find you?

emepepicOh yes! Come visit me! I love to meet new readers and writers.

Author Rose Montague is in the Fantasy Spotlight

rosebook

Rose Montague grew up around books.  The avid reader held positions in book stores and a local library.  She had the desire to write a book, but never got around to it until a back problem sidelined her.  The injury prevented her from sleeping a full night.  Rather than complain, she used the early hour mornings to pen her first novel.  The vast majority of the novel Jade was written between 3AM and 6AM.

Welcome Rose.  I’m not sure how the weather is in North Carolina, but the temperature in New York is below zero.  Come warm up in the Author Spotlight and tell me about your debut novel, Jade.

Jade is an Urban Fantasy/Romance.  It is a mix of supernatural creatures.  The main character is a little bit shifter, a little bit witch, a little bit Fae, a little bit vamp, and a whole lot of fun.

There is some mystery to the book and many surprises. Jade’s origins, where she came from and why she is here are revealed along the way. A lot of humor , action, and fun involving a visit to Faerie, assassination attempts, adventures in driving, a magical dagger, and a little romance make this book an enjoyable read.

How did you begin your writing career?

When I was a teenager I submitted some short stories to some Sci-Fi and Fantasy magazines.  All rejected and I would not continue this effort for several decades.

Who is your book published through?

Eternal Press.  They have been very helpful and supportive.

Where did you get the inspiration for this book?

I love the genre and my primary influences were Faith Hunter, Ilona Andrews, Darynda Jones, and Kaylana Price.

What else are you working on?

Book Two (That title will be Jane and Book Three will be titled Jill)

Who reads the drafts of your novels?

I have some Facebook friends and family that really help me by reading as I progress along.

The interesting thing is the truly international side of this.  Friends in the UK, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the US have given me input and suggestions as well as a great deal of encouragement in my writing efforts.

What would you say is the most challenging part of writing a book?

I lack patience, and writing a book requires a lot of that.  It is a learning process.

Did you conduct any kind of research in order to write this book (visit certain locales, etc.)?

Yes.  The setting in the last part of the book is Guildford, UK.  I was fortunate to have a Facebook friend that lives there help me.  I have become an expert in the fine art of Google-Fu.

Tell me about the publishing process. Was it easier or more difficult than you expected?

Rejections are hard to get used to.  You just have to keep tweaking your book as well as your submissions.

Do you have specific techniques you use to develop the plot and stay on track?

I started with a brief outline and then went off the reservation.  LOL.  I have the ending of Book Two written in my head.  It’s going to be great.  Now it’s just a matter of getting to that point.

Thank you for joining me today.  I welcome readers to click over to www.farmingdale.patch.com for more information on Rose and her novel Jade.

Review of Innocent Monsters by Barbara Doherty

innocentmonsterSynopsis

When Kaitlyn dies, young writer Jessica Lynch loses not just a sister, but the calm centre of her stormy existence, the compass that guided her through a life disturbed by memories of their abusive father.
Confused, despairing and struggling to piece her broken life back together, Jessica meets reclusive William Blaise. He is an awkward and introverted man who has isolated himself from the rest of the world, battling terrible childhood experiences of his own. Their similar pasts bind them together and they become lovers, comparing scars and hurts, exposing their true nature to one another and finding a private kind of truth.
As investigations into her sister’s death continue, Jessica senses a growing awareness that William is not the man she wants him to be. But then, is she really the woman she thought she was?

REVIEW

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. The story of Jessica Lynch and William Blaise is a dark romance. The book is not for the faint at heart — but for the rest of us, it is a fantastic read. I will admit I almost stopped reading after page 3. The story of William’s abuse was more than I could handle. The thing that kept me reading was the author’s writing style. She drags you into the scene with her poetic voice. It took me a little while to read the book because of the emotion the author evokes. Some people may view that as a bad thing. When I read, I want to taste their food, I want to feel the fabric of the dress the character wears and I want to experience their emotion (no matter how difficult). I am thrilled to find this author and look forward to future work. Congrats on Innocent Monsters.

Supernatural/Historical Author P.J. Roscoe is in the Spotlight

Paula
Today’s spotlight author is P.J. Roscoe. P.J. Roscoe is a supernatural/historical fiction writer who enjoys writing ghost stories. After the death of her son, 16 years ago, she was grieving so badly that one morning she picked up a pencil and began doodling on some scrap paper. The doodles turned into short story that grew into a novel, which over the years morphed into the novel ‘Echoes’. Check out the book’ success since its 2012 release.
Echoes‘ awarded Winner of the e-book category in the Paris Book festival May 2013.

‘Echoes’ awarded Honorable Mention in the New England Book festival Dec 2012r

‘Echoes‘ awarded a Five star review from Readers Favourite Feb 2013- placing it in the semi-finals in July 2013

I am delighted to introduce the author of the novels, Echoes and Freya’s Child: P.J. Roscoe. Welcome P.J.? Where did you get the inspiration for this book?
Both my books and the third I am writing now are all supernatural/historical thrillers. My belief in the spirit world has always been significant since seeing ghosts from an early age and I have continued to help spirit move on if they wanted. I was part of a group that was called to haunted locations and we counseled a lot of souls. Got a lot of evidence of life after death – maybe that’ll be my memoirs one day!
My love for history has also played a huge part in my writing. I love delving into the past and finding snippets of history and weaving a story from that. Being adopted I don’t have any history beyond my 42 years, so I love to find out about everyone else’s!

Would you please share an odd behavior you’ve picked up while writing? (An example: during intense scenes, my fingers pound the keyboard.)
As I write I feel every emotion I hope my readers will feel. Be it sadness, joy, anger, fear and my favorite, lust!

Share a pet peeve of yours (related to writing or otherwise).
Famous people get their books published just because they are a name. That annoys me. Just because they are well known, doesn’t mean they can write a good book, they get someone else to do it. I feel society holds too much on a name – give us every day storytellers a try!

Do characters invade your head the moment you stumble on a new writing idea? If so, how long did you fear that you’d gone insane before realizing this is the norm for writers?
My characters become real to me. I wrote an article on ‘Is writing a type of schizophrenia’ http://www.lpobryan.com/emerging-writers-guest-post-31-p-j-roscoe-is-writing-a-type-of-schizophrenia/ because I can ‘see’ them, ‘feel’ them and know everything about them. I have walked through town and seen a dress in a shop window and turned to my husband and said, “Bronwen would never wear anything like that!” to which he replied, “Well, of course not, she’s not real!”
I think you have to know your characters intimately otherwise how can you make them ‘real’ on paper? I never considered myself insane, but when I’ve finished the book, I do grief for them and it takes me awhile to move onto my next project. I have lived with the characters for so long, they become a part of me.

What is your day job?
Author! My part-time jobs are counselor and holistic therapist in a wellness spa and of course, Mum.
Did you conduct any kind of research in order to write this book (visit certain locales, etc.)?
I do a lot of research for my books. I try to get inside my characters heads.
For Echoes I visited Shrewsbury a lot, visiting possible sites for scenes and acting them out with my husband to see if they worked. The research libraries are also my best friends! And the pubs!! I talk to people which has been hard for me, I’m quite shy, so I’ve stepped outside my comfort zone.
For Freya I spoke to archaeologists and visited the site over a few months to see how it changed during the seasons and wrote down everything. Visited libraries and spoke to re-enactors about Viking life as well as locals who had stories to tell.

For my next novel, I again am visiting the area a lot, taking photographs, acting out scenes, speaking with so many people and working with libraries. (Haven’t finished yet!) One thing I have found since writing, there are a lot of kind people out there willing to help and I thank every single one for indulging me.

How do you overcome writers block?
Never had it! I’ll probably have it now – jinxed myself!!

Thank you P.J. for taking the time to speak with me. I am thrilled we discovered one another. I wish you the very best!

M. Homer is in the Author Spotlight!

mhomercoverart

I met an author from New Zealand and am thrilled to introduce you to her. M. Homer is the author of a new-adult novel entitled Dare to Breathe. Eternal Press published the novel in November and it already has great reviews. Ms. Homer couldn’t be happier considering she was so frightened to share the manuscript, that she filed it away. It wasn’t until her cousin agreed to read the manuscript that Ms. Homer gained the courage to share her work. I am thrilled for this author and delighted to share snippets of reviews I found for Dare to Breathe.

“As the title states…Dare to Breathe…there were moments throughout this book that I had to remind myself to breathe! An exceptionally good read…”

“The writing has you feeling and loving each and every character in the story which makes it very hard to put the book down.”

“Wow, this story was so compelling I just had to keep reading and finish this book in one go.”

Welcome M. Homer! I am pleased you stepped into my spotlight. New adult is a hot, new genre. I’m eager to learn about Dare to Breathe.
It’s a New Adult story that focuses on two main characters: Samantha and Nathan. Sam has problems assimilating into college life when she is plagued by reoccurring nightmares. She has to leave her dorm because of these to find a home where her sleep patterns won’t disturb her flat mates.

Her college advisor finds a home off campus with a tiny downstairs room away from all the other bedrooms. The problem is that it is a co-ed house. Sam finally relents and moves in. Here she meets Carrie, Ben, Mandy and the gorgeous Nathan.

As Sam falls in love with Nathan, who is always there to pick her up when she is at her lowest, she discovers that her new friends are hiding a secret of their own. Between Sam’s nightmares and Nathan’s secrets, the couple needs to learn to overcome, trust each other and move on in order to have any chance of happiness together.

Problem is that the past always has a way of catching up with you.

Where did you get the inspiration for this book?
Through all my favorite New Adult authors in particular Nyrae Dawn, J.K Redmerski and Jessica Sorenson.

How long did it take you to write your current novel?
Three months DAY AND NIGHT!

You mentioned that your cousin read drafts of your manuscript and encouraged you to publish Dare to Breathe. I think she deserves a little shout-out. What’s her name and tell us about your process of communication.
My patient cousin is Amanda Begg all the way from South Africa. We communicated through frantic emails, texts and SKPYE calls.

What is your favorite snack while writing?
Wait is this a trick question? Wouldn’t everyone be the same? Chocolate of course.

Would you please share an odd behavior you’ve picked up while writing? (An example: during intense scenes, my fingers pound the keyboard.)
Internal thought discussions are a particular habit of mine. I am constantly writing what they would be thinking as this seems to be a massive trait of mine. Not sure if this is normal or my little obsession when writing now.

What else are you working on?
I have written a romantic comedy. It is about an American-Italian family who are planning a traditional Italian wedding.

Roberta Hoffer is in the Author Spotlight

Today in the author spotlight is ROBERTA HOFFER. robertapicture

Roberta is the author of The Silent Vampire Trilogy. Eternal Press released her latest book, SILENT HEART, earlier this year. Please welcome Roberta Harrow!
roberta-silentheart

Please tell the readers a little bit about the book you wrote.

IT BEGAN AS A SINGLE BOOK IDEA THEN DEVELOPED INTO A TRILOGY. I ALWAYS HAD AN INTEREST IN VAMPIRES BUT WANTED TO CREATE MY OWN “VERSION” OF WHAT I THOUGHT A VAMPIRE SHOULD BE.

What else are you working on?
I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON A SEQUEL TO THE SILENT VAMPIRE TRILOGY. SO MANY READERS WANTED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SARAH’S ACCIDENT. HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE RELEASED IN 2014. ETERNAL PRESS WILL ALSO BE THE PUBLISHER.

Would you please share an odd behavior you’ve picked up while writing? (An example: during intense scenes, my fingers pound the keyboard.)
I VISUALIZE THE SCENE I AM CREATING AS IF I AM WATCHING IT ON A MOVIE SCREEN. I WRITE WHAT I VISUALIZE IN ORDER TO GIVE THE READER THE FEELING OF BEING THERE; IN THE SAME ROOM WITH A HUNGRY VAMPIRE, OR BEING INTIMATELY CLOSE TO AN ASHEN IMMORTAL THAT LOVES YOU TO THE DEPTH OF HIS SOUL.

Which do you find more embarrassing to write, violence or sex?
SEX MOST DEFINITELY. I KEEP MY BOOKS FREE FROM IMPROPER LANGUAGE AND EROTIC SCENES. I DO, HOWEVER, INCLUDE SCENES THAT WILL STIMULATE YOUR IMAGINATION AND ALLOW YOU TO COME TO YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS.

Did you conduct any kind of research in order to write this book (visit certain locales, etc.)?
I INCLUDE A SPECIFIC HOUSE FROM MY HOMETOWN WHICH WAS ACTUALLY MY GRANDPARENTS HOUSE. IT HAS BEEN A SOURCE OF MANY A TEARFUL NIGHTMARE FOR ME IN MY PAST. IT STILL STANDS ALTHOUGH IT IS IN MUCH NEED OF REPAIR. I VISITED THE HOUSE AFTER WRITING SILENT HEART TO TRY TO STOMP OUT ANY ISSUES I HAD WITH THE HOUSE. I END UP DESTROYING THE HOUSE IN MY BOOKS.

If you could change lives with any of your characters for a day, which character would you choose and why?
I WOULD DEFINITELY CHOOSE SARAH. I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO MEET MY ANCESTORS AS LOVING VAMPIRES THAT CARE FOR THEIR OWN. TO BE ABLE TO EXPERIENCE TWO SEPARATE WORLDS THAT BLEND TOGETHER WOULD BE AMAZING.

Interview with Leanna Harrow

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA
When I first discovered author Leanna Harrow, her picture captivated me. Her smile and the sparkle in her eyes reflected a great person. I had the pleasure of chatting with her online a few months ago, and learned her personality matches her sweet face. Little did I know that Ms. Harrow suffers with Rheumatoid Arthritis and was a victim of a Catfish scam. A “catfish” is a situation where individuals misrepresent themselves online. They often use phony profile pictures, fake names and pretend to be someone they are not. Ms. Harrow used the experience to create the Maggie West Series. I am excited for you to meet her and learn more about her writing.

Leanna Glamour shotWelcome Leanna! Please tell us a little bit about the book you wrote.

The series is about a woman who’s at a crossroads in life and meets a “Catfish” (someone with a fake profile) online and decides to play with him for a little while. It leads her on the journey of a lifetime, literally.

What can you tell us about your main characters?

I can tell you the back ground of the main character, Maggie West, is all me. I was sick and tired of all the main women characters of late, being weak minded and helpless. I wanted a strong, independent, flawed woman that everyone, men and women alike could relate to. The male characters all have some of the traits of the men I’ve met in real life in one way or another…

Tell me something about yourself that might be funny to others? (Other than writing)

I published a book about the fights I have in my head under my real name.
Leah Marie Stephens, Thompson, Thompson, Turner, Tate. If you think the name is funny, read the book (LOL)The title is Me, Myself & I…Funny Fights I Have With Me, Myself and Well, I.

Who is your book published through?

Eternal Press

What is your favorite snack while writing?

Crunchy Cheetos but the orange powder they leave are a mess to try and get off the keyboard 😉

Share a pet peeve of yours (related to writing or otherwise).

Dirty dishes left in the sink overnight. My kids are all grown and still cannot grasp the concept of rinsing them and putting them in the dishwasher! Ugh!

How did you start your writing career?

I started my first book in March of 2012 and finished it on Mother’s day 2012 LOL

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A ballerina, a private detective and a race car driver.

What are your favorite TV shows?

2 Broke Girls and Grey’s Anatomy. They are my guilty pleasures 😉

If you had your own talk show, who would the first three guests be? Why?

Johnny Depp because he’s Johnny Freaking Depp! Mariska Hargatay because she’s
beautiful, talented and the daughter of Jane Mansfield and President Obama…I have some ideas for him 😉
